Polish Pancakes Anyone?

Recently I was sent a lovely selection of Polish food from Polish Village Meals. I have always enjoyed trying new cuisines, as I grew up eating a lot of Turkish food and have always appreciated different flavours. This was my first time trying Polish food, so I was very excited and intrigued to try the meals I had been sent.

Polish Village Meals was created by Polish Village Bread which began as a small bakery in 2004 and has since gone on to become the largest Polish Bakery Company in the UK. They offer a variety of baked goods, from traditional Polish rye flour breads, pastries and cakes. Polish Village Meals offer traditional Polish dishes like dumplings and pancakes, however they are very different from the dishes that we know.

Here are the delicious dishes that I tried...

Krokiety z Serem Typu Greckiego i Szpinakiem Pancake Stuffed with Spinach and Cheese

These Polish pancakes are large and breaded and have a generous filling of a spinach and cheese. I chose not to shallow fry these but to warm them up in the microwave for a minute or so, as I believe this is a healthier option. However, with the Krokiety z Grzybami i Serem (mushroom and cheese filling) I lightly fried them in a pan with a little olive oil which allowed the pancake to become more crispy on the outside creating a light crunch with every bite. These pancakes would make a good starter or great party food when you want something more delightful and exotic.

Piers z Kurezaka w Pierzynce Breaded Chicken Breast topped with Mushroom and Cheese

These breaded chicken breasts are very similar to chicken escalopes. However, they are chicken covered like a pizza with toppings of cheese, mushrooms and peppers and were very enjoyable. The flavours from the topping with each bite of chicken gave a mouth full of cheese and seasoning making them very different and delicious. The only negative was they were a little oily, however I imagine these would taste less so when cooked fresh.

Kapusta Zasmazana Sautéed Cabbage

This dish is made up of thin slices of cabbage, onion, carrot, leek and parsnips, seasoned with dill and parsley and sautéed which I then reheated on the cooker for a few minutes. I personally am not a huge lover of sautéed cabbage, I prefer them raw in my salads but the taste was very different to what I had expected and lots of different flavours that was a little too much for me. I would recommend only a small portion as a side to a main meal like a chicken dish. This would be a perfect dish to serve with your roast turkey at Christmas.

Pierogi Ruskie Dumplings filled with Potatoes and Soft Cheese

I have heard a lot about Polish dumplings and was very excited to try these. These dumplings were filled generously with potatoes and cheese and would make great comfort food either as a main dish or as alternate side dish to roast potatoes. I reheated them in some boiling water for a few minutes on the cooker and drained. I sprinkled some cheese on top as, for me, I found it did give a little more flavour to the dumplings as they were a bit plain in taste. This is a good dish to serve to little mouths as they are so soft and easy to eat.

If you have ever wanted to try Polish food or are a big foodie and love different cuisines then definitely try Polish Village Meals for something different, especially the Pancakes, they were my favourite out of all the dishes I tried and will definitely be purchasing some soon.
