The Turkish Festival Experience

Me and the family took a trip up to London last Saturday for the Turkish festival at South Bank, located right along the Thames the Turkish National flags could be seen swaying in the wind to mark the occasion.

The smell of the charcoal barbecues (mangals as we Turks call them) was all around. All the traditional Turkish foods could be smelt from every direction.. Luckily for me I missed breakfast so I could eat enough to cover breakfast, lunch and dinner!!

First thing we had was a mixed grill, with pitta and Turkish salad.. Amazing! Chicken and lamb shish and köfte (a lot like meatballs but with parsley and herbs).

A nice cold glass of Efes, a Turkish brewed beer to wash down the first course hehe!

This food is my all time favourite Turkish dish, Lahmachun (Turkish pizza) traditionally eaten as a wrap filled with a mixed salad of red onions, parsley, tomato and cucumber..such a light and healthy dish to eat especially when the weather is warm.

Moving on through the stalls, we could smell these beauties before we saw them, Bulgur köfte. Cracked wheat filled with mince meat slightly spiced with herbs, eaten with squeezed lemon juice..delicious for any meal of the day.

And finally (as we were getting pretty full) we treated ourselves to a nice plate of sweet dessert...

BAKLAVA!

A traditional dessert made with filo pastry, crushed nuts (traditionally pistachios) with a sweet syrup poured over the top which soaks through each layer creating a mouth watering dessert, very sweet but very delicious!

As the day came to an end we decided a nice warm drink for the walk back to Waterloo East would be the cherry on the cake as we were so full from all the gorgeous food we had eaten..so what better than a nice warm cup of apple tea to cleanse our palette..

What a lovely day out in London Town..
